Bold text from this page is made of Unicode bold letters, so it stays bold where there is no bold button: Instagram bios, LinkedIn posts, WhatsApp names, YouTube comments and game nicknames.
In a WhatsApp message you do not need it: wrap the word in asterisks, like *this*, and WhatsApp makes it bold.
Which bold to choose
- Bold (serif) looks like book type and has bold digits.
- Bold (sans-serif) is cleaner on phones and also has digits.
- Bold italic, Bold cursive and Bold gothic add a slant, a script look or a blackletter look.
Punctuation and emoji stay as they are, because Unicode has no bold versions of them.
When not to use bold Unicode
Screen readers may read each bold letter by its Unicode name, and search inside apps usually does not match bold letters to plain ones. Use it for a word or a name, not for whole paragraphs, and avoid it in text that must be searchable, such as a job title on LinkedIn.
Questions
How do I make bold text in WhatsApp?
Put an asterisk on both sides of the text: *bold*. WhatsApp formats it when you send. The WhatsApp page has all the formatting symbols.
Does bold text work on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn posts have no bold button, so pasted Unicode bold is how most people do it. Keep it short, because it is harder to read with a screen reader.
